Replace the encoder wheel, knob, and arm on your Echelon bike with the AT1428 kit. Follow this step-by-step guide to check compatibility, remove the old parts, and install the new assembly correctly.

Quick answer

To replace the encoder wheel, knob, and arm on your Echelon bike, first confirm your bike has a pigtail connector (typically any bike made after 2020). Then remove the old assembly, transfer the knob and arm to the new encoder wheel, and reconnect the wiring.

Why the pigtail connector matters

The AT1428 encoder wheel only works if your bike already has a pigtail connector inside the frame. Echelon notes that this is supposed to be any bike made after 2020, but model names alone are not a reliable guide. Even if a parts sheet lists your bike model, the physical connector is the deciding factor.

When the AT1428 is not the right choice

If your bike lacks the pigtail connector, this encoder wheel will not function. Also, the current interchangeable parts sheet does not list the EX5s series as compatible with the AT1428 (as of March 16, 2026). If you own an EX5s, check with Echelon support before ordering. For other models, inspect the connector first; if you are unsure, contact support with your bike's serial number.

Step-by-step replacement

  1. Check for the pigtail connector: Remove the plastic cover near the resistance knob and look for a small white connector with wires (the pigtail). If you do not see one, stop—the AT1428 will not work on your bike. Snap a photo of the connector before unplugging anything; it helps with reconnection.
  2. Power down and unplug the bike: Turn off the bike and disconnect it from the power source before touching any wiring. This prevents damage to the electronics. Wait a few seconds after unplugging to let any residual power drain.
  3. Remove the old knob and arm: Loosen the set screw on the knob (if present) and pull it straight off the encoder shaft. Then unscrew the arm from the frame or wheel assembly, keeping the screws in a safe place. Do not force the knob if it sticks; check for a hidden clip or second set screw.
  4. Disconnect the old encoder wheel: Unplug the pigtail connector from the old encoder wheel. Release any clips or screws holding the wheel in place, and lift it out. Avoid pulling on the wires; grip the connector body instead.
  5. Install the new encoder wheel: Position the AT1428 encoder wheel in the same orientation as the old one. Secure it with the original screws or clips, then plug the pigtail connector firmly into the new wheel. The connector should click or seat fully; a loose plug causes erratic resistance.
  6. Reattach the knob and arm: Slide the knob onto the new encoder shaft and tighten the set screw. Reinstall the arm using the original screws, but leave them slightly loose until you test the movement. Test the knob rotation before final tightening; it should turn smoothly without binding.
  7. Test the resistance and calibrate if needed: Plug the bike back in and power it on. Turn the knob through its full range and check that the resistance changes smoothly on the console. If the response is erratic, unplug and reseat the connector. If resistance does not change at all, the pigtail may not be fully seated or the wheel may be misaligned.

Product facts

  • Encoder Wheel w/ Knob & Arm | AT1428: The AT1428 encoder wheel requires a pigtail connector, which is supposed to be present on any bike made after 2020. Without that connector, the replacement wheel cannot communicate with the bike, so verify its presence before starting the job.
