Compare the Echelon Ellipse EL-8s and EL-5 on stride, incline, resistance, and display to find the right home elliptical for your goals and budget.
Quick answer
Choose the Echelon Ellipse EL-8s if you want a longer 20-inch stride, a large touchscreen, and light commercial-grade stability. Choose the EL-5 if you want a more affordable elliptical with 32 resistance levels and a tablet holder for your own device.
Stride length and comfort
The EL-8s offers a 20-inch stride, which suits taller users and those who prefer a more natural running motion. The EL-5 does not list a stride length, so if you are above average height or have long legs, the EL-8s is the safer choice for avoiding a cramped feel. For shorter users or those who like a compact motion, the EL-5 may still feel comfortable, but the missing spec means you should try it if possible.
Display and training experience
The EL-8s includes a 22-inch HD touchscreen that connects to Echelon's instructors, giving you an all-in-one training experience without needing a separate device. The EL-5 uses an advanced LCD display with pre-programmed settings and a tablet holder, so you can use your own tablet or phone for workouts. If you prefer a built-in screen, the EL-8s is more convenient; if you already own a tablet, the EL-5 lets you save money and still follow along.
How to decide between the EL-8s and EL-5
- If you are tall or want a natural stride: Choose the EL-8s for its 20-inch stride. The EL-5 does not list a stride length, so if you are over 5'10" or have long legs, the EL-8s is more likely to feel smooth and comfortable. Measure your inseam and compare it to the 20-inch stride when possible.
- If you want a built-in screen for classes: The EL-8s includes a 22-inch HD touchscreen with Echelon instructors. The EL-5 requires your own tablet via its holder, so factor in the cost of a tablet if you don't have one. If you already own a tablet, the EL-5 can save you money without losing connected training.
- If you want more resistance levels on a budget: The EL-5 offers 32 magnetic resistance levels at a lower price, giving you more fine-tuning options than the EL-8s. If you like to micro-adjust intensity, the EL-5 is the better value. Consider how often you change resistance during a workout; more levels help if you do interval training.
